Andrej Jemec (born in 1934)

Jemec was born on 29th November 1934 in Ljubljana. He studied painting at the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Art (1953-1958) in the
classes of Prof. Marij Pregelj, Gabrijel Stupica, Božidar Jakac and R.Debenjak. He graduated in 1958. With the help of a scholarship
from the Prešeren Fund, he furthered his studies in Paris (1963/1964) in the studio of J. Friedlaender and in London. He taught at the primary school in Šentvid (1958-1961), then worked as a freelance artist (1961-1973). He was a member of Grupa 69 and he participated
in every exhibition mounted during the time of the group's activity (1969-1980). He exhibited at the Vnice Biennial twice (1970, 1972) and at the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1971. In 1973 he started lecturing at the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Art (a full professor of drawing and painting since 1984), and was appointed dean twice (1977-1979 and 1979-1981). He exibited at the Venice Biennial twice (1970, 1972) and at the Biennial in Sao Pulo in 1971. He has received numerous awards for his work, such as the Grand Prix at the 4th Graphic Art Biennial in Tokyo (1964), an honorary medal at 3rd International Biennial of Graphic Art in Frechen (1974), the Jakopič Award in Ljubljana (1975), the 1st premium at the 11th International Graphic Biennial in Ljubljana (1975) and the Prešeren Award for his life work (1994). His work includes painting, graphic art and drawing (after abstract landscapes, he achieved a synthesis of variegated coloured and drawn compositions with a shaded border between the abstract and figural forms in the 1980's, tapestry, sculpture, graphic design and advising in matters of colour harmonisation (such as for the Cankarjev dom cultural and congress centre in Ljubljana). He also took an active part in the founding and design of the programme of studies at the department of design at the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Art.
