Adriana Maraž (born in 1931)

Maraž was born on 16 December 1931 in Ilirska Bistrica. She has lived in Italy since 1946. In 1949 she began her studies at the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 1958 under Prof Maksim Sedej. In the late 1950s she made a study trip to Paris.

At her first exhibitions she showed oil paintings. Around 1965 she began her exploration of graphic art. She has received several awards for her graphic prints, including the award of the Portfolio 73 international graphic art exhibition in San Francisco, the award of the 8th Zagreb Exhibition of Yugoslav Graphic Art in 1974, the Grand Prix of the 2nd Graphic Art Biennial in Fredrikstad, the first prize at the 3rd International Graphic Art Biennial in Frechen, the 1977 Jakopič Award, and the 1983 Prešeren Fund Award for Original and Technically Perfected Achievements in Graphic Art. She was member of Grupa 69. On several occasions she has exhibited with her husband, Janez Bernik.

The motifs of her graphic prints of refined colours are everyday objects, most often pieces of period furniture, sacks and tins. Isolated, placed in surreal light or blended with anthropomorphic and other unusual additions, these objects become vehicles of poetry, nostalgia and accents of irony; the objects come to life with a new message - the hint of the transient nature of all things.
