He was born on 18 January 1937 in Planina near Rakek and is the brother of Drago Tršar. From 1952 to 1955 he attended the blacksmiths' and crafts' school in Kropa. He studied sculpture at the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts (1958-1963, under Professors Zdenko Kalin and Frančišek Smerdu). He completed post-graduate studies in sculpture in the class of Prof. B. Kalin at the same academy (enrolling in 1963/1964 and completing in 1966). He furthered his studies in Italy (1970 on a grant from the Prešeren Fund), France (1975 on a grant from the Moša Pijade Fund and in 1976 as a part of a cultural exchange between Yugoslavia and France), Poland and Hungary. He has participated at sculpture symposiums where he has used various materials. Between 1970 and 1972 he exhibited with the Neoconstructivists group (Neokonstruktivisti) group. He was an art teacher at Pionirski dom in Ljubljana and in 1979 began lecturing at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana (since 1990 as full professor of sculpture; 1989-1991 dean of the Academy of Fine Arts). He has received numerous awards, among others the Zlata Ptica Award (Golden Bird; 1970) and the Prešeren Fund Award (1978). His work encompasses sculpture (he is well known for his "lumino-objects" from the 1970's; he now mainly works in bronze), drawing and teaching.
