Purg was born on 7 April 1955 in Ptuj. He studied sculpture at the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts (1973-78, Prof Slavko Tihec) and pursued further studied in Cologne (1991, Moše Pijada Scholarship), Glasgow (1995, Glasgow Sculpture Studios), Paris (1997) and Belfast (2001). He now lives and works as a freelance artist in Celje.

At his first solo exhibition at Likovni Salon Celje in 1983, he exhibited sculptures and drawings, since at the beginning of his career his main areas of interest were sculpture/anti-sculpture, drawing and illustration. But in the 1990s he began using other/new media and turned to multimedia art (installations, performances, photography, video). In addition, he has contributed stage and costume designs for dance and theatre performances (Plesni Forum Celje).
